Abstract:
The next generation of neutrino-oscillation experiments are expected to bring definite answers to the neutrino-mass hierarchy and violation of charge-particle symmetry in neutrino oscillations. To achieve these goals it is, however, necessary to ensure a significant reduction of uncertainties, particularly those related to neutrino-energy reconstruction. As these measurements are going to be performed at the kinematics where the dominant mechanism of interaction is scattering off individual nucleons bund in nuclei, I will argue that it is highly improbable that theoretical approaches unable to reproduce (e,e') data would provide sufficient accuracy in neutrino interactions. I will show that nuclear effects can be accurately modeled in the spectral function approach, paying special attention to the importance of interactions between the struck nucleon and the residual nucleus. Due to its great importance for the US neutrino program, I will also discuss in details the Ar(e,e'p) experiment in Jefferson Lab, the analysis of which will soon provide a necessary input for estimating the spectral function of argon.
